FBC Family History
FBC ChurchThe FBC Family History

The First Baptist Church of Boerne had its beginning on August 14, 1898. when Rev. J.M. Mizzell met with six charter members to organize the church. Services were first held in a building on the north side of San Antonio Street between Dr. Mason’s office and the court house. The church joined the Medina River Association on October 14, 1899, and shortly after became pastor-less.

In 1906, the San Antonio Association initiated a reorganization of the church. The original property was sold and beginning in December 1908, services were conducted in the Methodist Church. In 1921, the church bought property at 615 S. Main Street. On June 10, 1923, the church held services in their new building, some 25 years after the church was founded.

In 1977, five acres were acquired on the southeast corner of School and Highland Streets. On July 27, 1980, FBC dedicated a beautiful new sanctuary. To meet the needs of a growing Sunday School, a Children’s Education Building was dedicated in September 1987.

In 1992, the church was able to purchase an additional 11 acres of adjacent property. In 1994, the church voted to approve a master plan to be accomplished in phases. The master plan was to provide adequate space and facilities consistent with the vision of 1,500 in worship and a base of 1,200 in Sunday School.

Phase I of the master plan included a new sanctuary, added space for the Children’s Building and additional parking for 100 automobiles. Following a successful capital campaign, the construction part of Phase I began. On May 3, 1998, the first worship service was held in the new Worship Center. During the month of August 1998, FBC celebrated its 100th anniversary with the theme, “A Century of Faith… a Future of Faithfulness.”

A second capital campaign was launched in 2003 to begin Phase II. Phase ll consisted of the construction of the Family Life Building, completion of the balcony, and construction of additional parking spaces. Also, several facility modifications were undertaken in 2005, including converting classroom space in the original adult education building into offices, and the old Fellowship hall into a break room and weekday preschool classrooms. Also accomplished were Children’s Building room modifications, and the modification of the Student Center, known as the Hub, from a gymnasium like environment into a large group Bible Study / Worship space for the students .

In September 2005, the FBC family opened the new Family Life Center, which includes a commercial kitchen, library space, classrooms, and a fellowship hall that contracts or expands as needed. The Helping Hands Ministry, a group of men who minister through construction projects, added a beautiful deck as well. Our growth can be seen in places other than our campus. On January 14, 2001, over 130 church members were sent out to begin Currey Creek Baptist Church. The FBC family has helped plant three churches in our Hispanic community, which we continue to support.

Our facilities are home to several community-based programs, such as AWANA, a Boy Scout troop, Girl Scout Troops, the Boerne Area Christian Homeschoolers (BACH), Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPs) and Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). We participate with other faith families in community-wide prayer and in reaching out to the community through Hill Country Daily Bread, the Hill Country Pregnancy Care Center, Grace House, prison ministry, and Christian Women’s Job Corps. First Baptist Church is a ministry of people, not stone and mortar. We are a family of faith with arms open wide to embrace our community. We seek to be a blessing to others, sharing that which God has so richly blessed us!
