India’s Unreached People Groups: Why FBC Boerne Sent Its Senior Pastor | SO THAT Missions Podcast Episode 76 (Part 1)

India’s unreached people groups represent one of the greatest gospel needs in the world today. In Episode 76 of the SO THAT Missions Podcast | FBC Boerne, Pastor Jason Smith and Missions Pastor Chad Mason explain why the church sent both its senior pastor and missions pastor to India — and what they discovered when they saw it firsthand.

Why India’s Unreached People Groups Still Matter

India is home to approximately 1.4 billion people, making it the most populated nation on earth. Among India’s unreached people groups, many communities have less than 2% evangelical Christian presence — meaning there is not enough gospel witness locally for the faith to multiply on its own.

In some regions, people are born, live their entire lives, and die without ever hearing the name of Jesus — not even once.

That reality reshapes how we understand missions.

Pastor Jason shares what it was like returning to India 25 years after first visiting as a college student. What was once a place with almost no visible gospel movement now shows surprising signs of growth — yet the need remains staggering.

In This Episode You’ll Hear…

  • What “unreached” actually means (and why the 2% threshold matters)

  • Why India holds one of the largest concentrations of unreached people groups

  • Pastor Jason’s full-circle story returning 25 years later

  • Reports of unexpected gospel growth in unlikely places

  • Why FBC Boerne is exploring business-as-mission partnerships

Psalm 67 reminds us:

“May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face shine on us — so that your ways may be known on earth, your salvation among all nations.”
