How Nine People Changed a Village

Intro

What happens when a church doesn’t just send a team — but goes with them through prayer, generosity, and encouragement? In Episode 74 of the SO THAT Missions Podcast, Chad Mason and Brittany Whitworth sit down with Kelly Nelson to share powerful stories from the Malawi mission trip and why God blesses His people — so that the world will know He is near.

Episode Summary

This year’s Malawi trip marked a new chapter as Kelly led a team of nine to Missinja Village, continuing years of relationship-based ministry and discipleship. The focus was foundations training — walking men, women, and youth through the big story of Scripture and how it all points to Jesus — equipping new believers to grow deep roots and begin multiplying faith into surrounding villages.

Along the way, God multiplied everything: resources, energy, courage, and opportunity. From popsicle-stick photo “helpers” representing the sending church, to a van breakdown that became an unplanned gathering for the Word of God, this episode captures the kind of moments only God can orchestrate.

In this episode you’ll hear…

  • How Kelly’s role shifted from primary teacher to mission team leader

  • What it means to be a sending church — even from thousands of miles away

  • Why foundations training matters for disciple-making in oral cultures

  • The unexpected roadside moment that became a divine appointment

  • How pig pens, schools, and sustainability connect to gospel ministry

Scripture Tie-In

Psalm 67 reminds us that God’s blessing is never meant to stop with us — it’s meant to move through us. The vision in Malawi isn’t dependence on outsiders, but empowerment: local believers equipped to share the gospel with their neighbors and beyond — so that God’s ways may be known on earth.
