n a world where inclusivity is increasingly becoming the norm, certain events stand out for their exemplary commitment to creating spaces where everyone truly belongs. The Starlight Ball, hosted by the First Baptist Church Boerne, is one such event that not only celebrates but empowers individuals with special needs and their families. Through the voices of participants and organizers, we get an inside look at what makes the Starlight Ball not just an event, but a cherished community tradition.

Angie Scheiss, a parent of a special needs child, beams with pride when talking about the Starlight Ball. “It’s an exciting opportunity for my daughter. We look forward to it all year because it’s so much fun,” Scheiss shares. The event is more than just a night out; it’s a moment of pure joy and a testament to the support the community and the First Baptist Church provide. This sense of gratitude is echoed by FBC Member Shawna Verrett, another parent, who highlights the inclusivity and welcoming nature of the event. “You look around and we have all of our special friends here, and the community just comes together… It makes you feel so seen, welcomed, and just loved.”

The Starlight Ball is not only significant for the families it serves but also for the volunteers who help make it happen. Molly Miller, a Boerne High School student and Starlight Ball volunteer, finds joy in making the kids feel special. “It’s a very inclusive event… everyone just gets to have a good time without any anxiety or worries,” Miller notes. This sentiment of unconditional acceptance and fun is at the core of the Starlight Ball’s purpose.

Behind the scenes, the event is a monumental effort of coordination and love. First Baptist Pastor Jason Smith and Cathy Smith, the Special Needs Ministry Coordinator, share insights into the organizational aspect. With more than 80 special needs guests and over 200 volunteers, the event is a testament to the power of community and divine intervention. “There’s a lot of details and only God could be the one to put it all together… there’s just no other explanation,” Cathy Smith remarks on pulling off such an event with many moving parts.

The Starlight Ball goes beyond a single night of celebration; it’s a catalyst for ongoing support and service within the special needs community. Pastor Jason Smith looks forward to future initiatives, including a new space dedicated to serving special needs families, demonstrating the church’s commitment to sharing God’s love with everyone.

In essence, the Starlight Ball serves as a beacon of hope in a community that often feels left out. It shows that when people come together under the banner of love and grace, incredible things can happen. Through the combined efforts of families, volunteers, and the FBC church family, the Starlight Ball not only celebrates individuals with special needs but champions a world where everyone belongs.
